Who Needs to Register

GST/HST registration requirements for non-residents

If your inventory is stored in Canada (Amazon FBA warehouses, 3PL fulfillment centres), you are considered to be "carrying on business in Canada" and must register for GST/HST once you exceed $30,000 in Canadian taxable supplies. Even if you haven't hit that number yet, or you're brand new to selling in Canada, it's worth registering right away. Without registration, you can't claim back the GST/HST you're already paying on Amazon fees, imports, and other expenses.

  • Non-resident businesses selling goods stored in Canada (FBA, 3PL)
  • Digital service providers selling to Canadian consumers
  • Non-resident businesses importing goods into Canada
  • Companies exceeding $30,000 in Canadian taxable supplies
  • Voluntary registration (below threshold) to claim input tax credits

Why Non-Residents Choose Us

We simplify Canadian tax compliance

GST/HST compliance for non-residents involves unfamiliar tax systems, coordination with CBSA requirements, and communication with Canadian government agencies. We handle all of it on your behalf.

We're sellers ourselves. We understand how Amazon.ca works, which reports to pull, and where the CRA focuses its attention on non-resident filers. You're not getting a generalist who has to Google how FBA works.

  • Clear, documented email communication built for international clients
  • Complete compliance solution: GST/HST filing paired with CBSA record custody
  • We act as your authorized representative with CRA
  • No Canadian bank account required
  • Voluntary disclosure assistance if you have unfiled obligations
How It Works

Five steps to GST/HST compliance

  1. You tell us about your business: where you're based, how you import to Canada, and how long you've been selling on Amazon.ca. We determine exactly what you need.
  2. We handle the registration: we complete the full CRA application and handle all their follow-up calls directly. You don't deal with the CRA.
  3. Amazon tax setup: once approved, we help you configure your Amazon account sales tax settings, including individual SKU-level tax codes. We provide PDF guides walking you through it.
  4. Ongoing filing: we prepare and file your GST/HST returns on schedule and make sure you claim every eligible input tax credit.
  5. CRA support: we handle all CRA correspondence, audit requests, and compliance questions on your behalf as your authorized representative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about GST/HST for non-residents

The federal GST rate is 5%, plus provincial HST that varies by province. Ontario charges 13%, and Atlantic provinces charge 15%. Some provinces have separate provincial sales tax (PST) systems instead of HST.
No. The CRA can issue refunds by cheque to your foreign address. Having a Canadian bank account speeds up processing, but it's not required.
We can help with voluntary disclosure to CRA to minimize penalties and interest. The sooner you come forward, the better the outcome.
Yes. Registered businesses can claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) on eligible business expenses in Canada. The biggest source of refunds we see is Amazon seller fees. They charge GST/HST on every commission, FBA fee, and storage charge.
You're not required to until you cross the threshold, but we recommend registering right away. Once registered, you can start claiming back the GST/HST you're paying on Amazon seller fees, import duties, and 3PL expenses. Without registration, that money is gone.
No. If you sell using Amazon's North America Remote Fulfillment (NARF) program, Amazon is responsible for collecting and remitting the sales tax, not you. We make sure NARF sales are excluded from your filings so you're not overpaying.
The CRA typically takes several weeks to process registrations depending on their workload. We handle the application and all follow-up calls so you don't have to deal with them directly. The sooner we get started, the sooner you're approved.
If your freight company is acting as importer of record, you may not be able to claim back the GST on those shipments. We can review your setup and advise on the best approach.
Amazon collects and remits GST/HST on marketplace sales, but you still need to be registered and file returns to stay compliant. Registration also allows you to claim Input Tax Credits on your Canadian business expenses.
